FUCK YOU IF YOU DON'T LIKE CHRISTMAS

on that note

Mark Mothersbaugh - Joyeux Mutato

Tis the fucking season ya'll. Don't you just love christmas; fake smiles, awkward family conversations etc etc. Anyways Marky Mark's Christmas album is pretty damn decent. I highly reccomend giving it a listen. I cannot write much today because I do have access to any of my music (my external hard drive shat itself, which is supremely fucked up) and I therefore cannot listen to it. I did listen to it pretty recently though (my only listen so far) and it was really good from memory. Anyway enjoy.

As I cannot upload this I looked for a link on the internet. Hopefully this one is ok.

John Kinsella

John Kinsella is one of my all-time favorite poets. He is West Australian and lives in York. He is a very interesting dude and I highly recommend his work. I will link you to a couple of my favourites of his that are available online. These are all available (and more great work) on his online Western Australian Writing anthology. There are a lot of people (a lot people I know personally) who discount Australian literature as being ridiculously nationalistic and just generally cringeworthy. This is a completely narrow-minded, ignorant opinion to have. John Kinsella is just one of the many brilliant writers from Australia. Anyway if you enjoy this be sure to check out his political and social opinions. Totally interesting fella!

Big Blood - Space Gallery Jan. 27, 2007/Sahara Club Jan. 28, 2007

Ok this will be the last Big Blood album I post for now. I might some more later because I didn't even get to do a post on all of my favourites. But I did a few and if you like any of these you will love all of them. Anyway I saved the best one for last. This was the first Big Blood album that I heard, and the first one I listened to for a while. It is pretty simply one of the best albums I have ever listened to.

To be honest I cannot think of much to write about this today. I have kind of said alot about Big Blood in the previous posts. Also my itunes has just shat itself so I have to organise my fucking music on the computer again (serves me right for using itunes). Urgh! Point being that I am kind of pissed off at the moment
.
Well anyway this is probably their most solid album I guess. That isn't to say the others are not consistent, because they are all so good. To be honest I am not even particularly sure why I like this one slightly more than the others, Perhaps it is because it was the first one I heard. But I suppose it is probably because there are the most genius songs here. I really love these songs, A LOT! My particular favourite is 'The Rise Of Quinissa Rose'. It is about Caleb and Colleen's daughter and it is one of the most powerful, beautiful songs I have ever heard. It is such a simple and sparse song, and it is so great for it. The vocal melody is hands down one of the best things ever. Their voices shine as they always do, but it sounds even more special than usual on this track. Anyway you get the point, I really like this song.

All of the other songs rule as well. 'She Said Nothing' is playing as I write this. This song is Big Blood at their most folky I suppose. I feel like I am floating when I listen to this song. Colleen's accordion playing is really amazing on this album. The first track, 'Glory Daze' and track six 'A Hole In One' are essentially just Colleen's voice and the accordion (well 'Glory Daze' has drums as well) and the two instrumental interludes on are both have mainly accordion. Anyway these two songs are shit hot. After these songs they hit up probably one of their spaciest, most freaked out songs to date, being 'Don't Trust Ruin'. Everything is effected by delay on this song. For lack of a better expression, SHIT IS SO CASH!

'Sequins' is the last track.  And goddamn! I aways forget how great this song is. This song reminds me a lot of their Cerberus Shoal stuff. It is also pretty freaked out. Something I didn't mention in any of the other posts. Big Blood are a 'phantom four-peice', featuring Caleb, Colleen, and their alter-egos Rose Philistine and Asian Mae respectively. IT'S A FUCKING RIOT! anyway I am gonna finish this up now and get to organising my fucking music. URGH!!!!

Enjoy

Big Blood - The Grove

Yet another Big Blood album that is wildly good. Big Blood get their rock on for this album with electric guitars and such. 'The Grove is Hotter Than an Ocean's Oven' is a killer opener (AGAIN!) and the third track, 'In the Light of the Moon' is one of my favourite songs ever ("I already feel defeated and I'm still in bed"). The lyrics and the song are fucking excellent.

This album is from 2007, the year where they recorded another 5 albums (Including their best one). Personally I don't think their is one filler song on any of these 5 albums, or any of their albums for that matter. Another of my favourites on this album is 'Something Brighter than the News'. They are totally channeling The Sun City Girls in this one, but of course it doesn't sound nearly as bat-shit crazy (I should do a post on a Sun City Girls album soon). I love how Big Blood will sometimes channel a particular artist of style of music but it still always sounds distinctively like Big Blood.

They get fucking raucous (well sorta, for them at least) on this. 'Beast (1 Beast)' is a fucking foot stomper, also the slide guitar is bitchin'. In fact slide guitar features quite a bit on this album ('No Gravity Blues' and 'Low Gravity Blues'). The following song, 'Restless Purity' has it! This song is so amazing. It is somewhat raw sounding (as is this album in general), featuring only vocals, guitar (electric and some slide guitar) and some flutes in the background (am I missing anything?) Anyway it is a hard one to describe, but it is TITS. I guess it is another Big Blood song with a kick-arse melody and the unbelievably awesome vocals of Colleen Kinsella.

Anyway this is the fourth Big Blood album I have done in a row. I sort of wanted to do a bunch of them at once, probably because they are essentially the only band I am listening to at the moment. I think I will still do a couple more (at least 1 because I still need to do Space Gallery). But yeah apologies to anyone who is bored of only reading about Big Blood. But if you don't like Big Blood I am going to assume that you are a fucking moron. Nah I kid, I kid. Anyway here is the download link (I am just using one I found on megaupload not one I uploaded myself, so hopefully it is decent).

Big Blood & The Bleedin' Hearts - s/t

Goddamn YOU Big Blood. Because you make so many goddamn genius albums I am going to have to spend the very little money I get on buying them.  I CAN'T AFFORD TO DO THIS! I thought I had settled on ranking my favourite Big Blood albums. Ranking is stupid, especially in my case because I change my mind so much. I still do it though. I am however certain of one thing, this is DEFINITELY my favourite Big Blood & The Bleedin' Hearts record. Ok well it is the only Big Blood & The Bleedin' Hearts record. It is also very very close to being my favourite Big Blood record (who knows, it probably will be tomorrow).

The Bleedin' Hearts are Tom Kovacevic, Micah Blue Smaldone and Kelly Nesbitt. So I think we can all agree straight up that there is a shitload of talent on this album. And damn it shows. I put the album on as I am writing this, and 'Oh Country (Skin & Bones)' just came on. So I am just gonna jump in. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER! goddamn!! The heart of all the best Big Blood songs are the best fucking vocal melodies you have ever heard. And as I said at some point earlier, with vocal melodies like that and Colleen's voice you sort can't go wrong anywhere. You know, Caleb has an awesome voice as well. I particularly love how their voices interact with one another. Anyway I am rambling. Colleen sings the most of 'Oh Country' herself. Her voice sounds so full of emotion, it is excellent. The melody is soaring, and it is completely enhanced by the instrumentation. The instrumentation on this record, and on this track is so great. THERE IS BANJO. I like banjo, fo' real. I also really love how they work with percussion. I mean generally is just sounds like they are just hitting a floor tom every bar (maybe some tambourine or something as well). Point being that the simplicity of the percussion leaves them with a lot of room to fill in with beautiful harmonies, guitars, accordion etc. Again the production is just amazing, 'etheral' seems to be the word that best describes the production. They just do everything right I guess.

Another really strong contender for 'Best Big Blood Song Award' on this album is 'Graceless Lady', the chorus is straight-up genius. "Goddamnnn youuuuuuu, Gracelesssss Ladyyyyyy" (I think you will have to listen to it). Again the first proper song, 'Baron in the Trees' absolutely kills. This one has a total Western vibe to it. There are galloping noises and everything. Caleb's voices sounds especially great on this one in fact. Likewise with the last proper song of the album. Caleb again shines. Actually this song, 'Night Lighter' is freaking delicious (you see Axel told me the other night that it is a thing to call something that is not food delicious to express how great it is. This is a totally new and innovative thing. Thanks dude!) In case you were wondering I am pretty much absolutely certain that Caleb and Colleen wrote all of the songs on this. So The Bleendin' Hearts are sort of a backing band I guess. I really love Micah Blue Smaldone (see the Red River Rough Cut post I did below).

I guess I could gush some more, but I won't. I am a busy man. Places to go, people to see.

(Who am I kidding. I am gonna get changed into my pyjamas as 4:12pm and play Mario Golf, watch The Wire and read my stories. Shit it is a friday. I think I should look for something social to do actually... nahhhh)

Enjoy!

Big Blood - Dark Country Magic

Big Blood - Dark Country Magic (Dontrustheruin, 2010)
In writing this review, I attempted to count how many albums Caleb Mulkerin and Colleen Kinsella have released over the past year, but shit’s just not worth tabulating. I can no longer keep up with what iteration of those Portland folk are still together (are Cerberus Shoal and Fire on Fire still active???) and when and who released what. For simplicity, let us assume that the number of releases Caleb and Colleen have secreted throughout the years is the very technical quantity ‘fuck load.’ I can almost surely (my faculties aren’t that certain) count on one hand how many albums Caleb, Colleen, Asian Mae, Rose Philistine, and miscellaneous strange Maine folk have put out under the Big Blood moniker this year—Dead Songs (Time-Lag), Night Terrors on the Isle of Louis Hardin (Cabin Floor Esoterica), Operators and Things (Dontrustheruin), PM50 (a compilation for Peasant Magik on which they appear), and now Dark Country Magic (Dontrustheruin) [that’s five, by the way]. So one could remark that that’s a mighty large number of albums for Big Blood this year, but given their prolific history, 2010 has just been another year’s work. But one especially unique aspect to Big Blood’s 2010 output is how stylistically diverse it was. By their standards, Dead Songs was a straight-laced rocker, whereas the drone-folk of Night Terrors was their furtherest left of the dial and Operators and Things found Big Blood in their comfortable ‘freakier and folkier than Devendraohyoualreadyknowthejoke’ territory. This new venture, Dark Country Magic, is nestled between the aforementioned three. It combines the the group’s trademark weirdness with the strong, conventional songwriting of Dead Songs. Their magnificent song crafting shines through in more than one instance, but “She-Wander(er)” is without a doubt the highlight, another ‘track of the year’ in a long line of stellar Big Blood cuts (“Song for Baltimore,” “A Hole In One,” Oh Country (Skin & Bones),” etc.).I never noticed until recently, but Big Blood are a band greatly influenced by their children, with references constantly popping up in Colleen’s lyrics. But not until Dark County Magic was this altogether obvious to me, with the critical mass of adorableness that is “Moo-Hoo” and the lovely collage insert of what I presume to be Caleb and Colleen’s children. While Big Blood may often employ dark themes, there never is a sense of despair in their music; there is always a shrining light. I’m constantly overwhelmed by an incredible joy for existence when listening, almost reborn. I think the influence of their children, the purity of youth, is partly responsible for this singularly positive aesthetic, and, in turn, why I love them so. As Danny said on his facebook, “Band of my life.”

So yesterday I sent Big Blood an email to ask a couple of questions and basically to tell them how much their music means to me. Late last night when I checked my email I was greeted by an overwhelmingly gracious, nice reply. Anyway this is sort of irrelevent, except that I probably love Big Blood even more now for it. NOT ONLY ARE MAKING THE BEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW BUT THEY ARE INSANELY NICE!

Ok so I have no idea what sort of order I am doing these albums in. Basically yesterday when I woke up I really wanted to listen Strange Maine 06, so then while sitting their listening to it I decided to do a post on it. And today I have found myself with a bit of free time and I was playing Dark Country Magic, so I am going to write on this one.

Well this is Big Blood's most recent album, they released it on the 1st of December. Big Blood's last album, Dead Songs, also released this year (seriously they release so much quallity music so often) was the first one with a proper CD/LP release. But here they are back again with another CD-R, and this one is very possibly the best so far. I really like the way they make and distribute their music themselves. It feels really modest and personal. How fucking great is the album art!? Colleen does it all herself (from what I gather, if not they do it together), and it is always so good. This one particularly is so great in the way that it really reflects how the album sounds and feels.

Anyway on to the actual music. My friend made a great observation the other day when we were talking about Big Blood, he said that "Big Blood have an uncanny ability to make the first and last songs on their albums insanely good." well this one starts with a short little introduction called 'Oh My Child'. Then the first real song starts, 'Creepin' Crazy Time', and it fucking rules. It sets up the album completely. Alot of the songs sound as though they are built around drones, which is usually over some sort of simple, but sweet-as-hell grooove. It is definitely the most psychadelic sounding Big Blood that I have heard.

The next song, 'Ringers in the Fold' sounds even more psychadelic, and again it is goddamn sweet. Then there is 'She Wander(er)', which is a pretty strong contender for the best Big Blood song ever. Colleen's voice sounds straight-up amazing as usual, and especially in this song. It has this really great vocal melody that, in conjunction with Colleen's voice makes this song something really special. I could go on and on about each song on the album and about how awesome it is, but I won't because no one really cares. What I am trying to say is this is one best albums ever, and totally the best album so far in 2010.

Don't feel bad about downloading this either, because being the nice people that they are Big Blood put all of their albums (with a few exceptions) up for free download on the net. I will still upload them onto this site for convenience because hell, I am just that sort of dude. THE DUDE WITH FAR TOO MUCH TIME ON HIS HANDS! Anyway I am going to end this with a statement that will completely reflect the awesome-ness of this here album.

Ready?

'SHIT IS SO CASH!'

Big Blood- Strange Maine Nov. 04, 2006

My my there is a lot to say about Big Blood. Big Blood and their other projects (Cerberus Shoal, Fire on Fire) have definitely been the best musical discovery I have had all year (THANKS AXEL!) They are  Caleb Mulkerin and Colleen Kinsella from Maine in the USA and they make lots of really really great music (so fucking prolific). They have realeased 14 albums (1 with The Bleedin' Hearts and one with Visitations) and 1 EP since 2006. Infuckingsane. They tend to release their albums simply as CD-R's by themselves. They did one properly through a small-time label I think. A bunch of the early stuff they released was named after shows they would be playing. I guess they just sold the albums at these shows or gave them out. I don't know what you would call Big Blood, maybe freak-folk, maybe psychadelic-folk, maybe avant-folk. I don't know, plus these classifications don't mean much. Anyway screw introductions, I want to talk about this album.

Ok this is their second album (I haven't been able to find the first anywhere). It is also definitely one of their best. The first 3 songs are some of my favourite Big Blood songs, especially 'A Friendly Noose'. I listened to this album today after totally binging on their most recent album. In contrast it is definitely more folky. I have read that they essentially record everything live. The production is always fucking amazing, and it does so much to enhance the music.

I can't think of much more to say about this one. I guess it is somewhat understated compared to the others. But that is probably a stupid observation. Basically it is just one of their most solid albums. It has some totally bitchin' tracks. and as a whole it works really nicely. IT'S TITS!

hmmm...

Is anyone feeling a week of Big Blood coming on? I think I am. I might upload a Big Blood album every day until I have done them all (or at least the ones that I really love)

The Gerogerigegege - Tokyo Anal Dynamite

Yo team here is HUDSON P. HUDSON HUDSON again talking vomit and shit.

ok you overwhelmingly grotesque sons/daughters of no one, i welcome you again to another informative and hilarious blog posting by big chief lawson

OH WAIT I TRICK YOU HAHA IT IS ACTUALLY HUDSON P. HUDSON HUDSON aka mr. chip-in.

on this installment of the rapidly multiplying guest series i provide here? yep, you guessed it,

THE GEROGERIGEGEGE'S 'TOKYO ANAL DYNAMITE'

now, i'm tempted to just write;

'see title. you can find this on google extremely easily.'

but that wouldn't be PROFESSIONAL in the mould of previous posts by bloggers everywhere. so i will write a few paragraphs then, ok? ok. ok i will write them. just for you.

the gerogerigegege (which roughly translates to 'throwing up and shitting at the same time') are one of the most confounding musical projects in the history of masterbation. formed by juntaro in the mid-80's, they are known mostly for their harsh noise releases (one of them being this one, i suppose) but they have a variety of records which touch upon many themes.

like for example consider their seminal 1985 release 'this is shaking box music: you are noisemaker', an empty box. you provide the cassettes (it can fit 100), then shake it.

also, consider their outrageous 1993 ep called 'night', with one side being the sounds of a guy doing a massive shit and the other being the sounds of a blowjob.

conceptually, the gerogerigegege embody everything i desire from rock and roll; a willingness to push the boundaries of what 'music' is, an insane desire to offend and challenge, a pre-occupation with superficially inane topics, like shitting and that juntaro is a crossdresser and that they occasionally had an old man masterbate on stage while operating a vacuum cleaner.

so, with all this context, what then of 'tokyo anal dynamite', a release considered by many to be not only the most 'accessable' gero release but also considered their finest? well, really, it sounds exactly like its title. it's 75 tracks (in 36 minutes) of noise assault, a barrage of sound against the senses, the only recognisable message to the ears being the introduction to each track;

(track title), ONE TWO THREE FAUH!

commence the attack.

when listening to it the first time, i've noticed many people, including mr. blogwriter, react the same way. it's harsh noise yeah, but because of the sheer ridiculousness of the count-ins, it results in laughter. and that's fine, that's ok.

however, this release is close to my heart for another reason. like i said before, it encapsulates everything that i expect good rock and roll music to be; existing as a mixture between sexiness and danger, not giving a complete shit about anything except EXISTING in that very moment and

an old man masterbating while operating a vacuum cleaner while a crossdressering maniac yells ridiculous stuff and bangs around.

this is basically perfect.

japanese ultra shit band awaits you. go forth and be stunned.

also i hope racoons maul your sense of decency. why not after listening to this album you go gargle on some unwashed balls, you festy little minx.

Iva Bittová & Vladimír Václavek - Bílé Inferno

Bile Inferno

This is a good'n this is. To be honest I am probably way out of my depth trying to write something intellegent about this album. Who am I kidding, this was never and will never be intellegent. Oh just a heads up , for some reason windows would not let me compress the folder with any accented letters so I had to change them. The song titles therefore are not exactly what they are supposed to be (I doubt anybody cares but you never know).

Alrighty, the year is 1997 and the language is definitely not enlglish. It is Czech for the most part, but if you really want to know what the lyrics are someone has translated it for you here. To be honest I didn't really have a yearning to know what the lyrics were but I stumbled across this. They are nonetheless pretty good. What Iva Bittova is singing is nothing compared to how she is singing. She is pretty wild , goin' all nuts and shizz with her vocals (i speak english goodly right?). I really like the vocal parts added by Vladimír Václavek as well. The two voices interact really well with each other.

It is obvious straight up that both Iva Bittová and Vladimír Václavek are pretty damn impressive musicians. The songs are filled with wacky time signatures and all sorts of things my feeble musical brain fails to grasp. What is great about it though is that they don't go all virtuoistic on our asses. It is restrained and still goddamn impressive. The balance is perfect.

I put off describing what the music sounds like because it is hard to describe. I will give it a whirl now though. ummm.. well Iva Bittová plays some wildly awesome violin while Vladimír Václavek plays some wildy awesome acoustic guitar. The songs are based around the interplay between the two instruments, and wild shreking vocal melodies accompany. Yeah something like that. It definitely sounds Eastern European if that helps. Maybe try 'Eastern-European Avant-Folk'.

Anyway it is a brilliant album. It is everything a callobration between two artists should be. The vocal and instrumental interplay between the two is really really great. It is a double album so I suggest only listening to it if you think you can stomach 1.2 hours of 'Eastern-European Avant-Folk', which admittedly I cannot always do. It is well worth doing though, because SHIT IS SO CASH!

Alvarius B / Cerberus Shoal - The Vim and Vigour of Alvarius B and Cerberus Shoal

Alvarius B / Cerberus Shoal - The Vim and Vigour of Alvarius B and Cerberus Shoal (North East Indie, 2002)

This split between Alvarius B and Cerberus Shoal presents two different takes on three songs. Both Alan’s and the Portland collective’s offerings are well worth listening to, though the real gem is the final track—Cerberus Shoal’s rendition of “Ding”. This mammoth, nearly twenty minute long track opens with a typewriter and a simple guitar melody. Soon enters Colleen’s voice and with it very well her best recorded performance that I’ve heard. Her lyrics have always been disjointed and these are no exception. Nonetheless, they are terribly affecting, acting as devastating one liners. “Confused, as well as clarified,” “Terror confounds my every cell,” and “Focus on your diaphragm, or hold your noes in effigy to mama” standout to me, but it’s all gold. The occasional recording of children’s laughter and joyous crowds fill the background as the track builds. The rest of the group vocally joins, harmonizing with Ms. Kinsella, eventually accompanied by that darned accordion. In time, you find yourself in the middle of a full-fledged anthemic barn-burner, wanting to sing along to as much as possible with a stupid grin on your face. Amazingly, it’s long duration is over seemingly right after it began, leaving the listener contemplating how many more times he/she wants to repeat the track.

This is going to be a hard post to write. There is a song on this split that I feel more strongly about than any other peice of music I have heard in my life. EVER.

This split from Sun City Girl's Alvarius B (Alan Bishop) and greatest band ever Cerberus Shoal has two different takes on three songs. Two of the songs are penned by Alan Bishop, and one of them by Cerberus Shoal. Alan's three songs open the split, and Cerberus shoal finish it off. Cerberus Shoal in fact finish the album off with the greatest song I have ever heard in my life, 'Ding'.

I am going to do the best job I can in articulating just how amazing this song is. Here we go..

Ok 'Ding' is a fucking monsterous 18 minutes long. Everytime I listen to it I cannot believe it has been 18 minutes, it is the shortest 18 minutes of my life. It does not allow you to zone out for a second, the song holds your complete attention for the entire time. It opens with the sound of a type-writer and a really simple, straightforward guitar melody. Colleen Kinsella (Big Blood, Fire on Fire and of course Cerberus Shoal) sings the first 6 minutes of the song on her own, with just the guitar melody, the tapping of the type-writer (which rises and falls with the vocal melody) and intermittent sound clips of children laughing. It is fucking powerful, and I would say the best vocal performance I have ever heard. I really love how the guitar is recorded really cleanly and her voice sounds so distant. and of course the vocal melody goddamn perfect.

After about 6 minutes Kinsella is joined by her bandmates and an array of different instruments (xylaphones, banjo etc.) This next 6 minute segent of the song has probably the best lyrics of the entire thing (the lyrics thoughout the whole song are completely genius). The lyrics sort of remind me of Jeff Mangum's I suppose. In fact I think 'Ding' was orginally a poem written by one of the band members, but I can't remember which one (THE BLOG WITH ALL THE FACTS!) Anyway this is a line from the song which I really like and can remember off the top of my head, "Focus on your diaphragm, or hold your nose in effigy to mama". It is full of these beautiful poetic lines.

In the final six minutes more instruments are brought in, most obviously a big, deep pounding bass drum which makes this song nearly impossible to listen to with the shitty speakers in my car. Still I say turn it loud.

Oh yeah, there are also five other songs. Mr Bishop's take on 'Ding' is still fucking awesome. His version is somewhat demented and he really emphasises the lyrics. but still it does not have the magic of Cerberus Shoal's version. Alan Bishop's two other songs are also really great. But putting anything next to the monster that is Cerberus Shoal's 'Ding' is completely unfair. It is the greatest 18 minutes of music you will ever hear in your life.

I really hope I have done a somewhat decent job of describing this song because it really does mean a great deal to me. Seriously, anyone who reads this, do yourself a huge favour and LISTEN TO IT!

Micah Blue Smaldone - Red River Rough Cut

I can't tell you alot about this release because I cannot find a whole lot of information about it (or I'm just lazy). I know that there is an album called Red River, and this EP is called Red River Rough Cut; ummmm, I know that he plays in Fire On Fire (with Big Blood/Cerberus Shoal members); I know that this is a ballin' EP. Oh yeah, and Micah Smaldone used to play in a political punk band called The Pinkterton Thugs.

I listened to the Red River album just before for the first time, thinking that perhaps it would be a better idea to blog the LP rather than the EP. However I really do not like it as much. This EP has only guitar and vocals, it is so raw and I love it. Whereas on the LP he has backing by other musicians. It really just does not have as good a vibe as this EP. Mr. Smaldone can sure as hell play the guitar like a goddamn motherfucker. The first track hooked me instantly when I first listened to this. It is an unaccompanied guitar peice, in the style of american privitism-type solo guitar work. There is much less going on in this song than all of the the other music I have heard in this style. He starts with this melody that has a sort of eastern feel (I am not doing a very good job at describing this), and as the song progresses he resolves this somewhat unfamiliar melody.

The second track is the title track on the LP (the tracks on the EP are all untitled). It is probably the best song that I have heard from Micah Smaldone. He has a really great voice, which complements his really great guitar playing. It is a really affecting, fragile song, with downright awesome lyrics. The 3 songs after this are also fucking genius. This dude is goddamn mind-blowing.

I can't think of much else to say about this... The production is absolutely amazing. His voice and guitar are recorded really nicely. The production does a great deal to complement his songs and playing. Do yourself a favour and download this, it is so so very good. Definitely one of my favourite recent discoveries.

SUFFER + BAMODI + MEKARE KARE + FROZEN OCEAN live at the ROSEMOUNT HOTEL

Here is a video of Frozen Ocean, Bamodi, Suffer and Makare Kare (Japan) live at the Rosemount. Macka from Frocean put together the video and wrote a review of the show. It is totally sweet.

REVIEW OF GIG:

(Apologies to THE GIZZARDS who I didn't film this particular night.)

Mid 2010 it was confirmed that Mekare Kare ( Bass, Drum, Noise, Two Piece ) were coming to Australia to play a few shows with a one off show in Perth at The Rosemount Hotel. A few Perth residence complain about un-original music making it's way out to W.A. Shame on these silly sods, because this particular Wednesday night a few wierdo's were blessed with the unique opportunity to witness some specialized musical imports. Even though there was a bungle with the advertising in local publications leading up to this gig, there was still a healthy turn out to witness some of Perth's finest "unusual" bands to support.

Opening act THE GIZZARDS is a one man frenzy armed to the teeth with effects pedals, toy instruments, guitars, keyboards and some fuckin' funny banter and lyrics. If you had the soundtracks of Twin Peaks, The X Files, Space Invaders and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles playing simultaneously, took acid and parachuted out of plane into the sea, this might be the sounds heard during free fall. ( Or the taste in your ears depending on the acid. ) Not enough people were down for this spectacle, but the few that were witnessed pure fuckin' awesomeness.

The next band were a guitar and drum, two-piece beast known as FROZEN OCEAN. Storming through a bizarre assortment of genres, riffs, timings and tempo blasts, this band utilize the loud/quite, slow/fast approach and they do it very well. There was a lot of feedback, screaming, spitting and beer drinking, in between songs and random screams from punters which is good to see for a support band of this nature. This band are one of the most energetic, raw and original punk bands comin up in our fine city.

For those who haven't seen BAMODI play live, do yourself a favour. For those that have, this was a long overdue reunion that was met with massive smiles. There was only one original band member remaining, but it was good to see that there was laughter and smiles amongst this new line up. Although a little shaky, they we're still entertaining.

With a moshpit forming and the feed back starting to wail the loudest it had all night it meant it was now time for SUFFER to have their turn with the audience. These guys have had a busy as hell 2010, playing hard-core shows very regularly around Perth. This gig was a good opportunity for people who wouldn't normally see this band to witness them live and see what people are talking about. This band are brutally heavy and are some of the best original music you'll see live. Ever.

Now it was finally time for the next act MEKARE KARE to tear the fuckin' Rosie apart. These guys are incredibly technical and entertaining, totally mesmerizing and spectacular. The tempo shifts, timing changes, drops, peaks and flurries of noises are only a small part of what make this Bass/Drum two piece so strong. Playing songs from their current album Exotic Duo Tones almost note for note, they left the stage only to be summoned for an encore by Perth's noisiest. After the final song had finished it was all smiles and chuckles throughout the beer garden. MEKARE KARE are sensational and missing this performance brings puts a dent in your soul. If you ever hear that this band are playing live do anything necessary to see them.

Thankyou for reading.

I know there is some video footage from a gig we played with frozen ocean on the weekend for Macka's birthday. I hope it gets uploaded soon, that was swell.

The Dead Milkmen - Beelzebubba

Beelzebubba - album cover

My love for The Dead Milkmen is turning in to a full-blown addiction. They are essentially the only band I have listened to for the past five days. OH MY GODDD! They are the best band ever (I proclaim this far too often).

"So silly, yet so clever" is probably the most accurate way sum them up. and the songs are so goddamn catchy. I think I have also read that they are a "satirical punk band". That is pretty apt. I have neglected these dudes for far too long. Goddamn genius.

Anyway, this is probably my favourite of their albums at this point, although this is likely to change. Big Lizard is totally ballin' as well. but this album has some of the greatest songs ever; 'Bleach Boys', 'Life is Shit', 'Stuart',  'My Many Smells', 'Punk Rock Girl', 'The Guitar Song'. It is fucking genius.

I can't say much more so I will leave you with some lyrics fromt he album.

"I'm so bored I'm drinking bleach"

"And in the sky I saw Richard Nixon
Smoking a lacey with Mr. Dickson
He said "Son there's something I must say,
I do believe I've found a better way"
And a vision came
And I new it was Bob Crane
And Bob sang:

Life is shit, life is shit
The world is shit, the world is shit
This is life as I know it
This is life as I know it"

Actually hell, I will just leave you with the lyrics to Stuart.

"Now, Stuart, if you look at the soil around any large US city,
there's a big undeground homosexual population. Des Moines, Iowa,
for an example. Look at the soil around Des Moines, Stuart.
You can't build on it; you can't grow anything in it. The government
says it's due to poor farming. But I know what's really going on,
Stuart. I know it's the queers. They're in it with the aliens.
They're building landing strips for gay Martians, I swear to God."
