Tis the fucking season ya'll. Don't you just love christmas; fake smiles, awkward family conversations etc etc. Anyways Marky Mark's Christmas album is pretty damn decent. I highly reccomend giving it a listen. I cannot write much today because I do have access to any of my music (my external hard drive shat itself, which is supremely fucked up) and I therefore cannot listen to it. I did listen to it pretty recently though (my only listen so far) and it was really good from memory. Anyway enjoy.

John Kinsella

John Kinsella is one of my all-time favorite poets. He is West Australian and lives in York. He is a very interesting dude and I highly recommend his work. I will link you to a couple of my favourites of his that are available online. These are all available (and more great work) on his online Western Australian Writing anthology. There are a lot of people (a lot people I know personally) who discount Australian literature as being ridiculously nationalistic and just generally cringeworthy. This is a completely narrow-minded, ignorant opinion to have. John Kinsella is just one of the many brilliant writers from Australia. Anyway if you enjoy this be sure to check out his political and social opinions. Totally interesting fella!

Big Blood - Space Gallery Jan. 27, 2007/Sahara Club Jan. 28, 2007



Ok this will be the last Big Blood album I post for now. I might some more later because I didn't even get to do a post on all of my favourites. But I did a few and if you like any of these you will love all of them. Anyway I saved the best one for last. This was the first Big Blood album that I heard, and the first one I listened to for a while. It is pretty simply one of the best albums I have ever listened to.

To be honest I cannot think of much to write about this today. I have kind of said alot about Big Blood in the previous posts. Also my itunes has just shat itself so I have to organise my fucking music on the computer again (serves me right for using itunes). Urgh! Point being that I am kind of pissed off at the moment

Well anyway this is probably their most solid album I guess. That isn't to say the others are not consistent, because they are all so good. To be honest I am not even particularly sure why I like this one slightly more than the others, Perhaps it is because it was the first one I heard. But I suppose it is probably because there are the most genius songs here. I really love these songs, A LOT! My particular favourite is 'The Rise Of Quinissa Rose'. It is about Caleb and Colleen's daughter and it is one of the most powerful, beautiful songs I have ever heard. It is such a simple and sparse song, and it is so great for it. The vocal melody is hands down one of the best things ever. Their voices shine as they always do, but it sounds even more special than usual on this track. Anyway you get the point, I really like this song.

All of the other songs rule as well. 'She Said Nothing' is playing as I write this. This song is Big Blood at their most folky I suppose. I feel like I am floating when I listen to this song. Colleen's accordion playing is really amazing on this album. The first track, 'Glory Daze' and track six 'A Hole In One' are essentially just Colleen's voice and the accordion (well 'Glory Daze' has drums as well) and the two instrumental interludes on are both have mainly accordion. Anyway these two songs are shit hot. After these songs they hit up probably one of their spaciest, most freaked out songs to date, being 'Don't Trust Ruin'. Everything is effected by delay on this song. For lack of a better expression, SHIT IS SO CASH!

'Sequins' is the last track.  And goddamn! I aways forget how great this song is. This song reminds me a lot of their Cerberus Shoal stuff. It is also pretty freaked out. Something I didn't mention in any of the other posts. Big Blood are a 'phantom four-peice', featuring Caleb, Colleen, and their alter-egos Rose Philistine and Asian Mae respectively. IT'S A FUCKING RIOT! anyway I am gonna finish this up now and get to organising my fucking music. URGH!!!!

Big Blood - The Grove

Yet another Big Blood album that is wildly good. Big Blood get their rock on for this album with electric guitars and such. 'The Grove is Hotter Than an Ocean's Oven' is a killer opener (AGAIN!) and the third track, 'In the Light of the Moon' is one of my favourite songs ever ("I already feel defeated and I'm still in bed"). The lyrics and the song are fucking excellent.

This album is from 2007, the year where they recorded another 5 albums (Including their best one). Personally I don't think their is one filler song on any of these 5 albums, or any of their albums for that matter. Another of my favourites on this album is 'Something Brighter than the News'. They are totally channeling The Sun City Girls in this one, but of course it doesn't sound nearly as bat-shit crazy (I should do a post on a Sun City Girls album soon). I love how Big Blood will sometimes channel a particular artist of style of music but it still always sounds distinctively like Big Blood.

They get fucking raucous (well sorta, for them at least) on this. 'Beast (1 Beast)' is a fucking foot stomper, also the slide guitar is bitchin'. In fact slide guitar features quite a bit on this album ('No Gravity Blues' and 'Low Gravity Blues'). The following song, 'Restless Purity' has it! This song is so amazing. It is somewhat raw sounding (as is this album in general), featuring only vocals, guitar (electric and some slide guitar) and some flutes in the background (am I missing anything?) Anyway it is a hard one to describe, but it is TITS. I guess it is another Big Blood song with a kick-arse melody and the unbelievably awesome vocals of Colleen Kinsella.

Anyway this is the fourth Big Blood album I have done in a row. I sort of wanted to do a bunch of them at once, probably because they are essentially the only band I am listening to at the moment. I think I will still do a couple more (at least 1 because I still need to do Space Gallery). But yeah apologies to anyone who is bored of only reading about Big Blood. But if you don't like Big Blood I am going to assume that you are a fucking moron. Nah I kid, I kid. Anyway here is the download link (I am just using one I found on megaupload not one I uploaded myself, so hopefully it is decent).

Big Blood & The Bleedin' Hearts - s/t

Goddamn YOU Big Blood. Because you make so many goddamn genius albums I am going to have to spend the very little money I get on buying them.  I CAN'T AFFORD TO DO THIS! I thought I had settled on ranking my favourite Big Blood albums. Ranking is stupid, especially in my case because I change my mind so much. I still do it though. I am however certain of one thing, this is DEFINITELY my favourite Big Blood & The Bleedin' Hearts record. Ok well it is the only Big Blood & The Bleedin' Hearts record. It is also very very close to being my favourite Big Blood record (who knows, it probably will be tomorrow).

The Bleedin' Hearts are Tom Kovacevic, Micah Blue Smaldone and Kelly Nesbitt. So I think we can all agree straight up that there is a shitload of talent on this album. And damn it shows. I put the album on as I am writing this, and 'Oh Country (Skin & Bones)' just came on. So I am just gonna jump in. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SONGS EVER! goddamn!! The heart of all the best Big Blood songs are the best fucking vocal melodies you have ever heard. And as I said at some point earlier, with vocal melodies like that and Colleen's voice you sort can't go wrong anywhere. You know, Caleb has an awesome voice as well. I particularly love how their voices interact with one another. Anyway I am rambling. Colleen sings the most of 'Oh Country' herself. Her voice sounds so full of emotion, it is excellent. The melody is soaring, and it is completely enhanced by the instrumentation. The instrumentation on this record, and on this track is so great. THERE IS BANJO. I like banjo, fo' real. I also really love how they work with percussion. I mean generally is just sounds like they are just hitting a floor tom every bar (maybe some tambourine or something as well). Point being that the simplicity of the percussion leaves them with a lot of room to fill in with beautiful harmonies, guitars, accordion etc. Again the production is just amazing, 'etheral' seems to be the word that best describes the production. They just do everything right I guess.

Another really strong contender for 'Best Big Blood Song Award' on this album is 'Graceless Lady', the chorus is straight-up genius. "Goddamnnn youuuuuuu, Gracelesssss Ladyyyyyy" (I think you will have to listen to it). Again the first proper song, 'Baron in the Trees' absolutely kills. This one has a total Western vibe to it. There are galloping noises and everything. Caleb's voices sounds especially great on this one in fact. Likewise with the last proper song of the album. Caleb again shines. Actually this song, 'Night Lighter' is freaking delicious (you see Axel told me the other night that it is a thing to call something that is not food delicious to express how great it is. This is a totally new and innovative thing. Thanks dude!) In case you were wondering I am pretty much absolutely certain that Caleb and Colleen wrote all of the songs on this. So The Bleendin' Hearts are sort of a backing band I guess. I really love Micah Blue Smaldone (see the Red River Rough Cut post I did below).

I guess I could gush some more, but I won't. I am a busy man. Places to go, people to see.

(Who am I kidding. I am gonna get changed into my pyjamas as 4:12pm and play Mario Golf, watch The Wire and read my stories. Shit it is a friday. I think I should look for something social to do actually... nahhhh)
