REVENANT RECORDS’ AMERICAN PRIMITIVE VOL. 1: RAW PRE-WAR GOSPEL COMP

(I put the title in all caps for you Axel)

Here is Axel talking about the blues and God and such.

A lot can change in say, A MONTH. Before, I was known as ‘Hudson P. Hudson Hudson’, a regular guy with a backdoor blogging problem. Now, I am known as ‘Hudson P. Hudson Hudson’, byline?

WRITER!

YES I have graduated properly into a world populated by the likes of Hemingway, Borges and Bruce Campbell. But I am a good man. I do not forget what made me the successful figure I am today. As long as my fingers can still furiously tap tap tap away on a borrowed keyboard, then by golly I’ll still write for my friend’s motherFUCKING blog!

Anyway, welcome, you SHIT to another Hudson P. Hudson Hudson ATTACK on the senses. Tonight’s topic of discussion? Yep, you guessed it, REVENANT RECORDS’ AMERICAN PRIMITIVE VOL. 1: RAW PRE-WAR GOSPEL COMP (so much caps in this bitch!) I decided that I gotta classy up this blog a bit. Sure there’s a bunch of cool shit on here, especially the stuff I write about, I mean crap dude, I like good music, but there is a distinct lack of I don’t know, BLUES on this blog.

And yeah, this ain’t any of that pussy willow ‘Eric Clapton pissing around in E Blues’ bullshit, this is fucking RAW as a goddamned piece of BLUE MEAT. Of course I’m a white guy student. Get off that stuff. Anyway, so some context I guess. You know that guy John Fahey? I know that guy John Fahey. One of the few musical figures I would call a personal hero. Man is just a legend. So in the 90’s he and a mate started this record label, Revenant, specializing in basically ‘Music you should be listening to.’ They released new (at the time) Jim O’Rourke, reissued some classic Cecil Taylor Trio recordings and compiled some of the greatest compilations of American Folk/Blues you’ll ever hear. This is one of them.

So what’s the difference between Delta Blues and Gospel? Well, let’s look at two artists which are considered some of the finest Bluesman ever to have strummed (they are not on this compilation for obvious reasons (the reason is you know who they are.)), Son House and Blind Willie Johnson. Now, Son House had a bunch of songs about owning one to no shoes, or having a ladyfriend that was two timing him with a horse, or other such as ‘Blues’ songs. That’s fine. That’s ok.

Blind Willie Johnson had songs about the crucifixion of Jesus Christ (listen to ‘Dark was the night, Cold was the ground’ and believe in God).

So there’s that. This is 78 minutes of dead dudes/ladies bangin’ away on cheap instruments, recorded on even cheaper and nastier equipment, wailing about how much they love God or how He is a vengeful figure.

AND THIS ABSOLUTELY FUCKING RULES.

Listen, consider Blind Roosevelt Graves and Brother’s ‘Woke up This Morning with My Mind on Jesus’, one of the hottest religious records ever made according to Fahey’s liner notes. I’m inclined to agree. (By the way, if you ain’t a cheap shit you DEFINITELY should seek this package out. The notes written by Fahey are both informative and hilarious.)

Or maybe cover star Charley Patton (aka Elder J.J Hadley)’s two parter ‘Prayer of Death’. Hell, there’s 26 bloody tracks on here, you’ll seek out your favourites and remove your duds. There’s songs here for everybody but there’s a common thread, OBVIOUSLY between them all and I’m not talking just about the poor recording quality, which is part of the Revenant experience, they ain’t cleanin’ up these 45s for anybody, especially not you.

The common thread is the power of religious expression.

I mean, I am by no means a God-fearing man but I connect with this on a personal level. Here is the inevitable personal anecdote: I’ve been listening to this for about a month or so pretty heavily and it came about to Valentine’s Day, you know of this day? And yeah I know it’s a Hallmark Holiday of the highest order but goddamn it, I’m a lonely guy. So I was lonely. And I bought some red wine and I was just thinking about writing myself off listening to some blues on this night. Because that’s what I wanted to do.

And I did, for a while. I just sat there and drank my cleanskin Merlot while these dead and buried men and women poured their SOULS out on shellac for the Lord. So I did what any self-respecting guy would do; I made Pokemon themed Valentine’s pun E-card for this lady I fucking adore. The LORD or rather this record just made me think ‘everything’s cool, man. Just have fun with yourself.’

So basically this ramble is saying, you’ll find what you like and don’t like in this comp, it’s a deep, deep well of material. But even the hardest atheist, or Richard ‘I’m possibly the biggest cunt in the universe’ Dawkins cannot deny that all the artists represented on this comp and others like it wail and moan for the Lord because, well, they just have to. And the results are often spectacular.

Believe in God, if only for a little while.

Dirty Three live @ ATP Tokyo 27 Feb, 2011

Dirty Three are pretty easily one of the greatest bands ever. Rhys and Susie met Warren Ellis while they were in Japan. He was just walking down the street in one of the busiest sections of Tokyo sippin' on some coffee, Rhys noticed him and just casually said "hey Warren"and he turned around and spoke to them for some time. Apparently he was a really lovely dude and all that. My favourite part of the story even though it was his day off or whatever he was still wearing his shirt half unbuttoned with all of those gold chains hung around his neck.

That was a sweet little story wasn't it?

Anyway I am still yet to listen to this recording. Apparently there is some hilarious banter and apparently they play a really great version of "Some Summers They Drop Like Flys". I am pretty excited to listen to it actually. That song is really really great.

Dirty Three live @ ATP Tokyo 27 Feb, 2011

I have to go to work now so I will do the two Godspeed shows either tonight or tomorrow

Fuck Buttons live @ ATP Tokyo 27 Feb, 2011

JEEEEEZ, I completely forgot about putting the rest of the recordings up.

Ok, well here is the Fuck Buttons set. Sadly it is not recorded as well as some of the others, but it is still really something. I didn't know if they would be impressive sounding live, but this is really great. Rhys was telling me that there was so much energy on stage and in the audience when they played. He even danced a little bit if I am not mistaken!

Boris live @ ATP Tokyo 27 Feb, 2011

I can't get over how fucking cool it is to have all of these recordings on here. Rhys, my hombre, you done good.

Anyway this here is Boris' set. I am actually only downloading it now so I haven't even listened to it yet. Nonetheless, I think I can safely assume that it is supremely awesome and all that. Rhys will probably write something about all the bands and the crazy shit that went on when he gets back (which is tomorrow) so STAYED TUNED.

Enjoy this!

Boris live @ ATP Tokyo 27 Feb, 2011

ps. I still have Fuck Buttons, Dirty Three and GBYE to put on here (he recorded Godspeed at the show they played 2 days later as well). so yeah, lots of good shit!!!!!!

pps. I have just started listening to it now. It sounds really great. The recording quality is pretty damn decent.

ppps. I need to stop saying "hombre". I will try and use "goochburger" in its place

Boredoms live @ ATP Tokyo 27 Feb, 2011

Sooooo my hombre Rhys is over in Japan at the moment. While there he went to the I'll Be Your Mirror festival curated by All Tomorrow's Parties, the same festival sporting THIS supremely awesome line up. The good news for me (and you) is that he recorded some of the bands on his newly acquired field recorder. ah ah ah yeah!!!!

so I will post the recordings on here seperately for all of us lovely people to share, starting with Boredoms. Rhys tells me they were all kinds of awesome with 6 drummers etc etc.

So enjoy the shit outta this!

The Milky Magnets - “THE COUNTRY MUSIC AWARDS” E.P

Alex is definitely one of the most talented and amazing dudes I have ever met. This is his most recent EP, and  in my opinion it is his best release yet. I really should have blogged this a while ago like I said I would.

This is the third EP of Alex's that I have heard (he has 2 others and a 7" available here on his blog). Like I said, I think this is the best thing he has done yet (although I really do love it all) because he has struck such a perfect balance between catchy-as-hell, beautiful pop-songs; confronting, somewhat ugly atonal music; and harsh, lo-fidelity recording. The most perfect example of this is in 'Pink Keyboard'. I really really love this song. It is such a beautiful piece of music. Also 'Science Gurls' is probably the catchiest song he has written yet. Really, really good shit.

I know I have already mentioned it, but the recording of this EP is especially stunning. The sound is still somewhat harsh and most definitely "lo-fi", yet there is this soft fuzziness to the recording of all of the songs. It is strangely inviting and comfortable.

Like Junk at The Rosemount, 5-2-2011

I like Like Junk. they are like a likeable bunch o' rascals (this terrible "joke" dies here. I am out of ideas). Anyway, I only really, honestly love a couple of bands in Perth. Like Junk are probably my favourite. They played a kick-arse set last night at The Rosemount (I think it was the best I have seen). Luckily this was also the night that Rhys decided to bring along his new field recorder. So GET ON THIS SHIT!

“I mean it’s terrible but it basically rules anyway” – The bogus story of a suburban kid, his struggle with life and how seemingly mediocre Power-Pop brings meaning.

Axel's back-door blogging is really something, ain't it? kinda puts me to shame. Anyway shit is about to get real. enjoy......................

Actually let me try that intro again...

This guy wrote a bunch of words on a two and a half minute pop song.
what a loser!

I’m going to bypass my usual introductions because this one is serious. This is as serious as a goddamned heart attack. And I will repeat half the title again – I mean it’s terrible, but it basically rules anyway. I’m talking about a few things here. Ostensibly, I’m talking about Ratcat’s 1991 single “Don’t Go Now” a number one hit in Australia. Yeah ok, I’m definitely talking about that. But the title also refers to a bunch of other stuff, like, oh I don’t know, maybe that little thing called LIFE. It also refers to me, because yeah I am definitely not good at a lot of things, but I still rule and am greater a person that you will ever be.

ANYWAY I guess some history is in order for those who cannot remember hearing this song before; ‘Ratcat were an Australian Indie Rock band of the late 1980s and early 1990s fronted by Simon Day’. This is Wikipedia’s definition and I really cannot argue with it. Besides being incredibly successful for an incredibly short period of time, Ratcat have no real defining characteristics that distinguish themselves from other bands of the day. They were just a band that played songs about girls, love, you know, all that crap. Plus like, most of their other songs suck.

And yeah, this song definitely sucks. But it rules too. That’s why it’s perfect. It really shouldn’t work not only as a piece of entertainment, but as a piece of art. I think it does on both counts. For one, on the entertainment side, it’s not a real offensive take on the power-pop formula, it’s just kinda dumb. When you have lyrics like

“And then when I'm alone, I dream of you,

til the day is done,

Don't you know I will be dying to be by your side.”

We’re not exactly dealing with Dylan or Cohen here. Hell, we’re not exactly dealing with your Year 9 Journal. But there is a universal sentiment here that makes these lines and most of this song work. UNREQUITED LOVE BITCHES. Who ain’t been there? It’s not a place I’d ever want to go back to, even though I am basically there right now at this very moment, but we’re all going to be there at various times throughout our seemingly pointless existence.

And that’s another thing I wanted to touch upon here, with my incoherent blabbering. For the longest time, I failed to find MEANING in this life (for those who find incessant outpouring of emotion/incorrect philosophising/generally shit writing, you should probably skip the next few paragraphs). I mean yeah, I’ve got it pretty damn good, better than most. I can sit behind the comfort of my laptop, typing on these dirty, dirty keys, about how life sucks and how things get you down like paying the bills, university scheduling, going out and coming home alone and various other bullshit topics. I could do that and I probably will at some point.

This whole meaning bollocks is a different kettle of fish though. It’s not such a simple thing as, “this thing sucks.” It’s more, “I have no idea whether this thing sucks or not. So I feel bad because of that” If that makes sense. I’m obviously not the first guy in the history of the world to feel this way, and people much more intelligent than myself will have explained this in an actual way that makes sense. I’m again not the first guy to have depression either.

Which is an ugly, ugly thing. Even when I type this I question its existence, because it’s so abstract. It’s not a question of feeling bad, terrible, anything like that. That is a result of it, but the initial break comes from NOT FEELING ANYTHING. Like waking up in the morning and instead of getting up, having a glass of orange juice, showering, maybe jerking off, going to work/uni/whatever, just living life, you wake up and you don’t feel like moving. Everything is a hassle, everything results in you staying in bed.

I have absolutely no idea where I’m going with this, so I’ll just cut it off and go with the build I envisioned before I got sidetracked by writing like a goddamned TYPICAL blogwriter. Better put it some swears before y’all think I gone soft like a massive BELLEND. TWAT. FUCK MASTER. SAUSAGE PUMPER. ARSE CANDLE.

That felt better. Well ok you remember a few paragraphs ago, where I threw disdain over Simon Day’s lyrics? Well ok, most of it is really quite bad, but there’s a pair of lines, the opening lines in fact, that make perfect sense to me and I feel are well, maybe not profound, but truthful;

“Well I've been looking around for feeling, some kind of sensation,

and you know i can feel it all inside”

And yeah, I’ve DEFINITELY been looking around for some kind of feeling, some kind of sensation my whole goddamned fucking life. We all do! AND I THINK I FOUND IT FOR ME. It has taken a while though. Although it was pointed to me in song, I didn’t find it in music, like collecting it or playing it, which is a little bit of a disappointment. I didn’t find it in drankin’, no matter how hard I try to see just how much whiskey can make a man turn sour towards his phone.

No,

I FOUND IT IN YOU STUPID FUCKERS

Well ok some context. I DID SAY I didn’t find it in drankin’, but I’ve definitely been giving that a fair shake lately. For the past few months lots of things just turned pear-shaped, what with family troubles, lady troubles, uni troubles, work troubles and all that. I’m not even counting the greater world in this equation because if I did that, well, you ever seen a grown man CRY?

So basically I told whiskey to tuck me in and be my breakfast for a while.

Anyway so one night I was piss drunk, feeling pretty bad about my whole life situation. I was thinking about how recently I completely fucked things up with a lady because y’know I’m still not a mature guy at all. Really. I’m not good at any of that stuff. So I still think about that a lot because I really did fall hard for this lady and there was absolutely NO WAY we were gonna be a thing (and if she reads this there’s most likely definitely gonna be NO WAY we are gonna be even friends. I thought about not writing this but fuck it, life is too short not to be honest with people. And it’s the context part of this anecdote.)

That is a thing. Being honest with people. So I started to think about that. And I was also trying to read some David Foster Wallace quotes, because I always like to appear well read to you internet folk. This particular one caught me a little off guard;

"The really important kind of freedom involves attention and awareness and discipline, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them over and over in myriad petty, unsexy ways every day.”

So after this I felt like a shit and the only cure was something that reminded me of my childhood, something about those small joys, like riding around in the car for example, sun blaring in the Australian summer, listening to Triple J and it made me feel warm.

So then I looked up this song on Youtube using the wonders of technology.

And I just felt fucking GOOD for once I mean I want to be GOOD for my friends instead of drinkin' so much I think yelling at people I've known for years is a good idea, that is never a good idea, I LOVE some people and I'm not ashamed to say I LOVE them even though some of them are pretty fat and do not wash regularly enough. There are still PEOPL, Even when shit has turned sour and it looks like things will get better before it gets worse.

Let me say too that there are loads of vile, disgusting, horrid people out there who commit the atrocities of this WORLD, which I will not name out of laziness, plus I will probably sound like Bono doing so. But there’s probably about a handful of people for each and every one of you smelly fuckers who makes this whole fucking mess of an existence worthwhile.

When we play guitars and sing about dildos, when we sit at the table and talk about cats doing drugs, when we sit and watch movies and you poke me in the eyes, when we drive around in cars and talk about the universe, when we go to quiz nights and answer correctly ‘OCTOPUSSY’, when we bring in the New Year and kiss beautiful sisters, when a kid strums a chord and laughs a bunch, when your mother makes you Christmas lunch, when your father calls Supertramp “two guys with wurlitzers”, when we dress up in suits and yell about the circus, when we get drunk and scream along to Weezer, when we throw up on a boat together and smile and kiss, when you call me up and say “I want to see you tonight.”

I love you stupid fuckers because of stuff like this. I know that in its whole it will only make sense to me but parts of it will make sense to some. And that’s ok.

And I know that trying to be less selfish is the most selfish decision one can make. But like DFW says, you got to care about people and sacrifice for them, not in the big “holy carp I just lost a leg saving your life from an investment banker” way but in the real small ways, to truly be free. That’s what I think anyway.

So in a completely round about, roughly 1690 words way I’m saying,

I need songs like this in my life. Maybe you DO, maybe you DON’T, but I STILL LOVE YOU.

I WANNA LIVE!

Oh I better mention the music I guess. The,

The guitar solo sucks balls.

Jack Rose - Kensington Blues

Ya'll want some mad chops?

Jack Rose is one of the best guitar players ever right? I mean yeah, it is derivative, but he is so goddamn  brilliant. It is just more of a good thing in my opinion.

Anyway in the spirit of being lazy this will be very short. The dude toured a shitload the year prior to recording and releasing this in 2005. He subsequently had honed his craft so that when he came to record this here masterpiece he apparently nailed all of the tracks in his first take. Impressive right? I find myself listening to this album a whole lot. He really covers a lot of ground here...

have to go out now so I will stop

just quickly though for those who don't know. Jack Rose sadly suffered heart attack in 2009 and passed away. The dude was a fucking master. Listen to this so you can dig.

Spires That In The Sunset Rise - This Is Fire

Spires That In The Sunset Rise (it is a long-winded but entirely decent name) are a group of four ladies from Illinois who make music that is some sort of blend of avant-folk and crazy-batshit-insane world music. I was reminded of this album after a week of thrashing the shit out of the Sun City Girls. It is a pretty fair comparison I think. They both explore non-Western approaches to music (through structure and instrumentation for example) and through a Western context.

I am going to refuse to re-read that first paragraph because I am sure I just dribbled some embarrassing, nonsensical bullshit. Anyway of the two albums I have heard from these peeps (the other being Four Winds The Walker, which is also a really really great album) I like this one slightly better. The instrumentation is particularly impressive and really effective here. Singer, Kathleen Baird's voice is really something. It shifts from ethereal and beautiful to haunting and witch-like reglularly (at times it is hard to pick which one). They create these amazing soundscapes using almost entirely acoustic intruments only, albeit lots of them. They manage to explore a shitload of grund in the space of a 5 or so minute song. I could perhaps write more about this but I am making an effort to keep these posts a little shorter, because I odubt anyone reads the whole, especially when they're long. Anyway. it is really impressive and rewarding album, although it is at times somewhat challenging. I really recommend listening. I will link you to their myspace where you can stream these tracks for free. You should buy it is you like it and can afford it.

Taco Leg

Taco Leg are without a doubt the best thing about Perth music. Their songs are really great and funny as hell. frontman extraordinaire/all-round awesome dude Andrew is straight-up a goddamn genius and fucking brilliant performer. He has this sort of awkward charisma that is so much fun to watch. He sings songs about 'Gossip Girl', '30 Rock' and once told me that practically all of Taco Leg's songs are about architecture.

Anyway they toured the US last month after receiving an arts grant from the Government, which is by far the best thing that could ever have happened. EVER!

This video was shot in San Francisco. I only just saw found out it existed last night. It is fucking awesome!!!!

Red House Painters- Down Colorful Hill/ Rollercoaster

Rhys wanted to do a blog post on the happiest, most feel-good music of all time. Here it is

A few months ago, I thought it'd be a good idea to listen to three Red House Painters albums in one consecutive sitting. Needless to say, I came out of it far more depressed than I was before I commenced this undertaking, and until recently have avoided listening to the Red House Painters. Such is the immense power of this band- they are easily the most heartbreaking, soul crushingly depressing, emotionally tiring band I have heard. I consider them to be one of my favourite bands, yet I listen to them very rarely due to the profound effect they have on me. Mark Kozelek is an amazing singer and his lyrics are heartbreakingly beautiful in their simplicity. I highly recommend both Down Colorful Hill (their first album) and Red House Painters (Rollercoaster), they both rank equally in terms of greatness in my books. They aren't the kind of albums you'll find yourself listening to regularly, but ultimately every listen is rewarding, however you may find you need to allow time to recuperate before listening to more Red House Painters.

Meat Grinder explained at long last!

some dude explains MF Doom's rhymes on a thread in the RYM forum. Axel linked me to this. It is genius

http://rateyourmusic.com/board_message?message_id=2032256&find=2032543&x=m#msg2032543

In fact I will just copy and paste it here

Does anyone know what Meat Grinder by Madvillain is about?

Tripping off the beat kinda, dripping off the meat grinder My shit's psychedelic, so's Madlib's

Heat niner, pimping, stripping, soft street minor Guns, hustling and seediness at a young age

China was a neat signer, trouble with the script digits Girl named China could do something but had trouble with school

Double dipbubble lips, sorrow less midget she'd get the end of the blunt wet, that short ho

Borderline schizo, sort of fine tits tho Despite being slightly schizophrenic, she had decent tits

Pour the wine hold the grind, quarter to nine, lets go We jsut drink and hold the sex, it's 8:45 let's go

Ever since ten eleven, glad she met a brethren She's been glad to meet me since 10:11

Then his last style seven alligator, seven at the gates of heaven Liked my alligator style, looking Godlike

Knocking, no answer, slow dancer, hopeless romancer, dopest flow stanzas I'm at her door and she's not answering me despite my dope steez

Yes, no Villain, Metal Face the death stroke How frustrating, but I'm not feeling villainous

Guest shows, still incredible in escrow I'm still quite rich

Just say hoe, I will taste the yayo, Wild West style fest, y'all best to lay low Still, I am not above devious deeds so you better not show up around me

Hey bro, Day Glo, set the bet, pay dough Remember I have dope flow stanzas

Before the cheddar get away, you best to get Maaco You better get your bodywork done before I take my money and leave

The worst haters God on perpetrated are favors
Demonstrated in the perforated Rod Lavers
Girls that wear Rod Laver Adidas are usually haters and up to no good anyway

... In all quad flavors, large savers
Still back in the game like Jack Lalanne
Now I'm saving money and all buffed out like Jack Lalanne

think you know the name, don't rack your brain
on a fast track to half insane
You don't know who that is, so you'll be confused by that remark

Either in a slow beat or that of speed or wrath of Kane
Laughter, pain
Doom's songs lit, in the booth, with the best host
Again, my stanzas are dope so no matter how I spit it you wouldn't have got it, which is both funny and sad, but also what makes me such a great emcee

Doing bong hits, on the roof, in the west coast
He's at it again
Mad at the pen
For example, I jsut came up with this doing bong hits on the roof of Madlib's studio

Glad that we win a tad fat in a bad hat for men
Grind the cinnamon, Manhattan warmongers
Happy to be well-liked in a shady business where you have to stay hot and deal with big business

You can find the Villain in satin congas
The vans screeches
The old man preaches
About the gold sand beaches
The cold hand reaches
For the old tan ellesse's
... Jesus
This is a "dope flow stanzas", good lord

Yellow Swans - Going Places

This album is pretty fucking spectacular. I don't listen to a lot of noise/drone music because I honestly do not enjoy a lot of it, but this is really great. There are more than enough reviews on the internet from reputed sources, so I doubt anyone is going to come to lil' ol' me to hear my two cents. But here they are anyway..

These guys broke up before this was released at the end of last year (is the album name supposed to be ironic?), and this is something of a last hurrah. It is also the first thing I have to listened to by them, so there is another reason to ignore my opinion/thoughts. It is really amazing though. They build these unbelievably dense, atmospheric textures around little themes and repetitive, almost abrasive loops. From what I gather all of their live shows and recordings were improvised peices. It really is quite an intense listen, and I strongly reccomend it.

Download

PS. I have been really lazy not updating this but I will be dissapointed in myself if I let this blog die. Point being that I am going to get back on this.
